Analysis of Primadonna - Marina and the Diamonds

Primadonna - Marina and the Diamonds

Camera:
This video includes a lot of close up shots of the main character in order to keep the focus on her throughout the whole video as ‘primadonna’ which implies that she thinks everything is about her and he more importance than a regular person. In addition, the main character also is aware of how attractive she is therefore the use of ‘seductive’ angles are used throughout to attract the audience to looking at her in that way.

Editing:
Some of the shots are filmed with a filter on them, which adds to the vintage feeling of the video that also goes with the location, costume and her hair and makeup look. There are a few clips that are black and white which again links in with the feeling that the video has a 50’s sense with the mis-en-scene that is included. The pace of the video feels very fast, short clips are used which means the video doesn’t drag and keeps it all quite exciting as its always changing.

Mis-en-scene:
The main colour used throughout is pink which adds to the girly feeling of the video and keeps it very innocent and feminine as that’s the character they’re trying to represent. The location and props indicate the luxury and wealth behind the song, including props such as chandeliers which make the character seem very spoilt and rich in her lifestyle. Every shot that contains a character is just her, there are no other people featured in the video which in itself just shows the message of the song is that this girl thinks the world revolves around her and sees herself as above everyone else in society. Her overall image is very glamourous and luxurious portrayed through her outfits and hair and makeup and it’s all kept girly and modern through the pink and the use of the heart on her face.

Sound:
Sound isn’t used predominantly throughout apart from the track which is lip synced by the artist in the video.

Representation:
The girl in the video is represented as being selfish and spoilt through the use of the lyrics of the song and the props and location the video is set in. Although these traits are negative, people wouldn’t hate her and are likely to be in awe of her due to her luxurious lifestyle and the way she doesn’t have much care or worry about life or money.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this video would probably be young females and this is shown through the use of pink and as the artist is also a young female they may feel they can relate to her and how she feels she’s the most important.
Performance and Narrative:

There isn’t much narrative throughout, no storyline takes place. She just performs the song and the feeling of the song is portrayed through her actions, facial expressions and the location and props used.
